Former MotoGP champion Casey Stoner is to have surgery on his left wrist this winter in a bid to save his career. The 22-year-old originally broke the scaphoid bone in his wrist in 2003, but the injury has never healed properly. "I have to have an operation; if I don't it could be my career over," said the Australian, who is still competing for second place in this year's event. "It's disappointing, five years on, it starts to flare up, but it's better to get it fixed at the end of the season." Stoner's mood, as he prepares for his home Grand Prix of Australia at Phillip Island this weekend, is in stark contrast to last year, when he won the race and was crowned champion. Valentino Rossi wrapped up his sixth title last weekend in Japan and Stoner can now only battle for second with Honda rider Dani Pedrosa, who is currently 11 points behind. "I'm a little bit worried about this weekend, to see how many laps I can do in the race before I start getting tired," Stoner admitted. Regarding the injury, which flared up again following a crash at Misano at the end of August, he said: "Pain-wise it's fine, it's just a weakness in change of direction and things like that. "In some ways we're lucky it did show us what the real problem was, so we weren't just ignoring it and finding a bigger problem later on."
