On Thursday at Sepang, Fausto Gresini confirmed he had a call with Max Biaggi with the aim of enabling him to come back in the MotoGP world championship next year.
Biaggi had his last MotoGP ride at the end of the 2005 season. Dismissed by Honda, he had a sabbatical year before coming back on circuits this season thanks to the World Superbike Alstare Suzuki team. However, this morning Suzuki and Alstare officially confirmed what everybody already knew: they won’t renew Biaggi’s contract for the 2008 season.
As regards Gresini, he has already signed a contract with Alex de Angelis for next season, and still has a Bridgestone-shod Honda to assign to a rider.
« We talked to see if such an opportunity could be interesting, » Italian press agency ANSA quoted Fausto Gresini as saying. « We will meet soon. Considering that the first tests will start immediately after the last race of the season at Valencia, we should take the first decisions by the last GP of the year. »
But a few things still have to be cleared up… First of all the financial question since Suzuki refuted to pay the salary that Biaggi asked for. Alstare Suzuki’s team owner Francis Batta even said that Biaggi received proposals up to the best MotoGP riders and refuted them all.
Then Gresini would have to convince Honda and, after the clash of 2005, it won’t certainly be the easiest step…
